RESEARCH UPDATE: BILL WHITMER

RESEARCH IS ON THE MOVE
2011 was an extraordinary year for HERO research activities. Five important research projects were completed. The first three projects have been published or accepted for publication in JOEM. They are: “The Impact of Wellness in a Small Business Setting Using Selected Well-Being Indices,” “Evaluation of a Best-Practice Worksite Wellness Program in a Small Business Setting” and “A Review of Corporate Health Culture Knowledge.”

In addition, two more projects, completed in late 2011, have been submitted for publication. The titles of these research papers are: “Presenteeism According to Healthy Behavior, Physical Health and Work Environment” and “Work Performance and Absenteeism According to Work Environment, Health Behaviors and Physical Health.”
The HERO Research Committees, under the direction of David Anderson, have provided insightful input and expertise that has been a major contributing factor to the success of HERO research production.

The Importance of Collaboration
Collaboration between HERO membership organizations and among individuals associated with those organizations has been critical to the success

we have experienced in reigniting the HERO research engine. Collaboration in the design and implementation of research efforts that is important to the enhancement of knowledge in the field.  In addition to collaborating on the creation of solid, actionable research, there is an opportunity to collaborate in the funding of this work. That’s why we have created HERO Research Partners.
What Is HERO Research Partners?
The intent of HERO Research Partners (HRP) is to change significantly the way that EHM Research is viewed and conducted. There are few if any topics in the EHM industry more important than unbiased and high quality research. To satisfy this need, the HRP brings together more effective methods to significantly enhance the quality, availability and dependability of Employee Health Management (EHM) research. HRP has the potential to be an important breakthrough for all who have interest in EHM research.
HRP Objective
The HRP will expand the number of organizations and individuals directly involved in EHM research. At the same time there will be a major increase in research funding. These efforts will provide research applicable for large, mid-size and small organizations.
HRP Mission
Our mission is twofold. First, organizations are invited to work together with the HERO Research Committee experts to create research designs that are innovative and acceptable to all participants. Second, this approach will make it possible for participating companies to share in the cost of these research projects, rather than funding the entire effort themselves. As an example, a $100,000 research project with ten HRP organizations providing $10,000 each, allows all contributors to realize $100,000 in research results, for an investment of one tenth of the cost.

There are real benefits to being an HRP organization. Included are involvement in identifying research topics, design of research projects, participation in the research manuscript process, and advanced access to research findings. And of great importance as well, contributing to building the scientific evidence that is the bedrock of employee health management. HERO invites your comments and thoughts about the HRP effort and other research projects.
