Message from Our CEO

Welcome to the second issue of HERO On Health. We appreciate the many kind comments received about the first issue, and look forward to hearing your thoughts once again. If you have a comment to share, please email me at jerry.noyce@the-hero.org.

Our Industry Spotlight article in this issue comes from Dr. Andy Crighton, Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer for Prudential Financial. His topic, building a culture of health in an organization, applies to companies of
all sizes. As mentioned later in the Research Report, a HERO study is underway to identify the knowledge base and tools available to help organizations create such a positive culture. We believe that the success of employee health management programs is linked to culture and leadership engagement, and data from the HERO Best Practice Scorecard in collaboration with Mercer support this connection. Thank you Andy for sharing your thoughts on this topic.

Congratulations go to John Harris as he assumes the leadership role of Chair of the HERO Board of Directors. Our sincere thank you to Andy Crighton for his two years of chairing the board. Andy now moves to the position of Immediate Past Chair. I am also pleased to announce that Hank Orme, President of Lincoln Industries, becomes Vice Chair and Bob Soroosh of Affinia Group remains as Secretary-Treasurer. We welcome new board members Vicki George from Kaiser Permanente, Fikray Isaac from Johnson & Johnson and Seth Serxner from Optum Health. As Board Chair, John Harris lays out our plan for his term in office over the next two years.  All members are invited to help us achieve our plan through their work on one of the several HERO committees. If you are interested in participating, contact us at angela.giedd@hero.org.

Finally, a word on two important projects that HERO is collaborating on with other organizations. First, our work with the Care Continuum Alliance (CCA) to create measurement standards and definitions for EHM programs is proceeding well. More than seventy individuals, representing members and staff from both CCA and HERO, along with NBGH, IHPM, IBI, NCQA and URAC  are involved in this effort. Our goal is to have this work completed by late 2012.

A second project that HERO is working collaboratively on is the creation of a document to provide guidance to employers who have implemented, or are considering implementing, financial incentives that reward employees for achieving certain health standards. This approach, commonly referred to as the “outcomes-based incentive approach” is being considered by an increasing number of employers. As a relatively new approach legitimized by the Affordable Care Act, there is a lot to learn and many issues to consider for any company considering its implementation. Members of the HERO Incentives Study Committee have been working together with representatives of the American Cancer Society, American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association and the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine to find common ground and draft guidance for employers. This document is scheduled for release this summer.

We trust you will enjoy this edition of HERO on Health
